f a w n s t r i d e The night sounded uncannily quiet. Unsettling so, especially with the sky covered in thick, dark clouds which blocked out the stars and moon. Most other creatures had taken to shelter in their dens, silently waiting for the rain to start and pass. This "calm before the storm" moment stood to be Fawnstride's favourite.
Of course, the fish darting below the surface of their ponds were unaware of the impending storm. As if rain would even create discomfort for them if they were out of their homes. As the slim cat tip-toed closer to the waters he contemplated the idea of fish even having dwellings. He had never sat by the water and studied a fish--nor had any intention to do so--but imagining his silvery prey sleeping in some underwater moss bed seemed like too much.
He crouched near the water's edge, emerald eyes following minnows as they cautiously traveled back to the shore. His pawsteps had caused them to dart away as he had approached. They were too tiny for him to be bothered with--the tomcat couldn't fathom any possible way to swat them out of the water. He decided to sit down and dipped a paw into the water, watching the miniscule fish flee frantically. He gave a little scoff and withdrew his paw from the water, waiting for them to come back.

How could that have happened? The bold calico she-cat trotted through the dark marsh with uncertain paws. Anywhere the solid ground could give way to thick mud or deep water, both of which she was in no mood to set foot in. Weaving her way between the water pools, PetalStar glanced skyward, hoping to see some celestial light but only found a dark gray mass as the clouds continued to swell.
"By StarClan, if I get caught in the rain..", she hissed as her paw suck into the mud with an ugly squelch. Withdrawing her now blackened paw, the leader began to rage silently, berating herself inwardly for loosing track of time and the way home.
A sudden flash illuminated the sky as lightning split the clouds, quickly followed by a deep, growling thunder. The storm was still a ways off, but it was intimidating none the less. "Oh, please let me get home in time!" Rain was not something PetalStar was afraid of, but thunder of all things.

Mudwater walked through the territory wondering what there was to do since he couldn't sleep. The pale brown tabby looked around his clear blue eyes scanning the territory for something to do. Suddenly he noticed Fawnstride sitting by the waters edge and he walked over to the tom. "Oh, hello Fawnstride how are you doing?" he asked with a polite dip of his head. While he waited for the toms answer he sat down curling his tail over his paws and gazed into the water watching the minnows dart back and forth.

f a w n s t r i d e Large ears pricked to the sound of sucking mud. His eyes lifted from the pond's aquarium, and scanned around him. Fawnstride raised himself, so now he was sitting, ears flicking as he looked around him, trying to find the source of the steps. He could hear some grumbling. Inhaling, Fawnstride was able to recognise the scent, and within moments located the silhouette in the distance.
He was just about to prance off when a voice startled him. Large, green eye turned to meet the face of a tabby. "Evening, Mudwater," He responded coldly, licking the fur on his chest quickly to try cover up his surprise. He'd been so focused on the sound of Petalstar he hadn't even considered glancing downwind. Foolish to let his guard down, even if it was just on his own territory. In the grand scheme of things, it didn't even matter. But he looked like a mouse-brain now, being so easily sneaked up on. "I'm doing alright, just stretching my legs," He added, very matter-of-factly, as if his answer was simply obligatory whether or not it held any truth.
He would have thought to ask Mudwater how he was, in return, but Fawnstride truly didn't care nor felt he was compelled to.

PetalStar skirted the edges of a murky pool, keeping to the thin, muddy shoreline as she did so. A thin sliver of light shown through the clouds, reflecting on the water's still surface like a ghost. The calico she-cat stopped in her trudging to glance at the pale light, green eyes lingering on the erie and captivating picture. But, just as fast as it happened, the reflection vanished as the clouds moved on, turning the water's surface back to that black abyss.
The female turned her head to continue on her way when the faint sounds of voices reached her. Twitching her ears to pin-point the voices direction, PetalStar turned her head. She found two cats faintly outlined in the grim night conversing with one another. Slipping a little closer, she was able to recognize FawnStride and MudWater. Oh how wonderful, she thought like a naughty kit. She crawled over to a reed patch to listen better on their conversation without being seen.
The molted calico leader was always curious as to what her deputy did when out of her sight. Though she had never really put much thought to it. Now, she would be able to know something, if anything.
